HAVING forged strong links with the French scene, Jazz North East now casts its net wider with a gig from Swiss pianist Christoph Stiefel. Described by one critic as “similar to Esbjorn Svensson, only quirkier”, he has rarely visited the UK, and this is his first gig outside London.

Now in his early 50s, Stiefel began his career with his own funk band Stiletto before a lengthy spell as a sideman with internationally acclaimed new age harpist Andreas Wollenweider. During this period he was developing his enthusiasm for jazz and formulating a distinctive ‘Isorhythmic’ approach that involves the simultaneous layering of several different rhythmic patterns. He has applied this practice in contexts from solo piano to full scale orchestra, but it with his ‘Inner Language Trio’, working with the sympathetic bass and drums team of Arne Huber and Kevin Chesham, that it reaches its fullest expression.

As well as these rhythmically intriguing excursions, Stiefel brings an entirely original touch to such standards as ‘Caravan and ‘The Girl from Ipanema’, all adding to his growing reputation as one of the most interesting voices on the contemporary jazz scene.

This gig is a co-promotion with Newcastle Literary & Philosophical Society, and is made possible with the help of funding from Pro Helvetia
