L'Entente Chordiale : Day Two  -  Thu May 10, 2012  |  07:30 pm
Day two of our Anglo-French festival L'Entente Chordiale starts with the return of the tremendous Parisian trio Q, who came to Gateshead's Central Bar last year and played a set of what one reviewer called "dazzling, uncompromising music". With the classic power trio line-up of Julien Desprez on guitar, Fanny Lasfargues on electric bass and Sylvain Darrifourcq at the drumkit, the band deliver a radical version of jazz-rock built around themes of controlled complexity, with an unrelenting rhythmic drive punctuated by intervals of almost meditative stillness.

Next up is drummer YANN JOUSSEIN, with a short set of solo percussion supplemented by samples and live electronics. This really is like nothing we've ever heard before - at times hilarious, at times deeply mysterious, and always unfailingly fascinating.

Then we finish the night with Tyneside's finest, Andy Champion's quintet ACV. With an acclaimed debut CD and a national tour behind them, the band has recently recorded a second album, due for release later this year. We at Jazz North East firmly believe that ACV, with Andy's potent compositions and great playing from all five members, are amongst the finest contemporary jazz groups anywhere in the UK, and ready to take their music to a wider audience.

Newcastle today, Paris tomorrow? Hopefully their participation in this festival will be a step in that direction.

This festival would not have been possible without the assistance of Newcastle City Council, the Arts Council of England, and SACEM (Société des Auteurs, Compositeurs et Éditeurs de Musique), to all of whom we are very grateful.
