L'Entente Chordiale : Day One  -  Wed May 09, 2012  |  07:30 pm
The first day of our Anglo-French festival, L'Entente Chordiale, brings together a power trio from North East England and a septet drawn from the cream of young London & Parisian jazz talent.

SPELK first came about when guitarist Chris Sharkey (of Acoustic Ladyland and trioVD fame) got together with his old bass playing schoolmate Andy Champion and drummer Adrian Tilbrook for what was really just a no-holds-barred jam. The chemistry was so good that they decided to repeat the exercise, and a superb set at the 2012 Gateshead International Jazz Festival convinced them that this is a band with a future. Their music is a kind of freely improvised jazz-rock (Adrian claims it's a new genre - FROCK) that operates at full throttle from the off and leaves musicians and audience alike exhilarated and exhausted!

Second act TWEEDLE-DEE is a new project bringing together leading players from London's LOOP Collective and its Parisian equivalent COAX, and commissioned by the Cheltenham Jazz Festival. Some of its members, like pianist Kit Downes and guitarist Julien Desprez, are old friends of Jazz North East, so we jumped at the chance of booking the septet in the wake of their Cheltenham appearance. Nominally co-led by Desprez and reedsman Robin Fincker, the group is in reality a collective endeavour in which a musical canvas is proposed and is then instantly adorned by each player's individual voice, with the varied instrumental line-up also allowing for different combinations to further enrich the palette. What emerges is not just a simple meeting of players from the two cities, but an actual bridge between the two scenes, opening up possibilities for further development of a rewarding bi-lingual musical language. We're privileged to be in on the process.

This is the first day of our two day festival. Discounted admission prices are available for anybody attending on both days.
