An extraordinary pairing of two of the legends of free jazz, emerging from very different backgrounds but finding a common language.

Charles Gayle is probably the most important inheritor of the American 'fire music' legacy associated with Albert Ayler and the late recordings of John Coltrane, yet for many years was barely recognised in his own country, living a hand-to-mouth existence in New York. It took the German record label FMP to rescue him from obscurity, and since the early 1990s he has issued a series of magnificently intense recordings, initially on saxophone and more recently also on piano.

Dutch drummer Han Bennink comes from the parallel world of European free improvisation, which sought to find a distinctive approach to the jazz tradition, and has been a prominent member of that movement since its origins in the mid-'60s. A remarkable player, he combines total freedom with driving swing, generated from the smallest of drum kits (and sometimes just from the furniture in the room), and lightened by an unquenchable sense of humour.

So, two veterans of free music, often taking different routes but now coming together to celebrate their common origins in post-war jazz. Like a planetary conjunction, this sort of meeting doesn't happen often, but when it does it's a major and unmissable event.
