Benjamin Moussay Trio  -  Tue Jun 28, 2011  |  08:00 pm
Admission £ 10.00 ( £ 8.00 concessions)

Like many of his French compatriots, pianist Benjamin Moussay brings an almost cinematic quality to his music, with tunes that build from sensuous dreamlike foundations to a series of powerful climaxes that nonetheless never abandon structure or melody. The great Canadian pianist Paul Bley is sometimes cited as a reference point, but Moussay draws on a whole range of influences from the lyricism of Chopin to the energy of rock, forging it all into an imaginative and distinctive approach of his own.

The partners in his long standing trio are equally wide ranging in their musical horizons, with bassist Arnault Cusisinier moving between contemporary big band jazz and his own art-rock quartet, and drummer Eric Echampard performing with artists as diverse as dynamic guitarist Marc Ducret and Finnish accordion player Kimmo Pohjonen.

This gig is a co-promotion with Newcastle Literary & Philosophical Society, and is generously assisted by the French Music Export Bureau.
