Tori Freestone & Alcyona Mick  -  Fri Jun 14, 2019  |  01:00 pm

If there’s one thing better than a gig from saxophonist Tori Freestone, it’s two! The day after a Black Swan concert with her long established trio, she comes to the Lit & Phil as half of a wonderful duo with pianist Alcyona Mick.

Although the two have known each other for years, working together in larger ensembles, they first appeared as a duo in 2015, playing Thelonious Monk tunes at a concert in the Canary Islands. The sparks that flew were instantaneous and bright, and it was immediately apparent that this needed to be a continuing project, not just to explore the Monk repertoire, but to develop new material specifically for the duo. Certainly the creative potential was vast; as well as sharing a grounding in contemporary jazz, between them the pair have a deep immersion in folk, Latin, Afro-Cuban and Arabic music, all of which blend subtly into their spontaneous, interactive approach.

The fruits of their collaboration were documented in their album ‘Criss Cross’, released in 2018, and enthusiastically reviewed by critic Roger Farbey as “elegant, engaging and original music, played with magnificent panache”. But because both musicians are in great demand in the UK and across Europe, opportunities for live performances as a duo have been infrequent, so this gig is something of a rare treat . . . and certainly one to be savoured.

"The no-hiding-place exposure of an improvising sax / piano duo is a tough call but the British pairing of pianist Alcyona Mick and tenor saxophonist Tori Freestone make light of it”
John Fordham: The Guardian
