For Jazz North East's first ever promotion at the Lit & Phil we're immensely proud to present a truly wonderful international quartet of musicians hailing from Australia, Canada, Sweden and Scotland.

Leader Alister Spence has long been recognised as one of the most creative and original contemporary jazz pianists in his native Australia, but in recent years he has toured in Europe, North America and the Far East, and is rapidly building an international reputation for his music. New York's Cadence Magazine has hailed his "considerable stylistic range", which embraces flying swing, meaty grooves, tranquil melodicism and passages of free improvisation, all merged into an absolutely logical and individual whole. Unobtrusively, but indisputably, Alister is becoming one of the most admired pianists in world jazz.

It's a measure of his growing international status that for this, his only gig in England, he's pulled together a group containing two Swedish-based players in drummer Chris Cantillo and Canadian-born bassist Joe Williamson, and the great Scottish saxophonist Raymond MacDonald (whom Alister first met in Tokyo!). With such a stellar team, and making use of the Lit & Phil's superb grand piano, we're convinced that this gig will be a revelation to those who haven't heard Alister before, and a demonstration of just why he is held in such high esteem.
