Grew Quartet + Grew-Watts Duo  -  Thu Mar 17, 2016  |  08:00 pm
Admission £ 10.00 ( £ 8.00 concessions)
The Grew Quartet played its first gig for Jazz North East in November 2014 - except it didn't! Last minute problems meant that leader Stephen Grew wasn't able to make the journey, so the Jazz Café audience were treated to a trio session from the remaining members of the band, clarinettist Matt Robinson, bassist Seth Bennett and drummer Phil Marks.

And it was sensational, but, as freely improvised music, and without Stephen's contribution on piano, it took off in totally different directions. So in welcoming back the full contingent, we are in effect presenting a new experience for listeners, music that touches on many influences, from cool, reflective lyricism, through passages of almost conventional melodic and rhythmic jazz, to high velocity workouts reminiscent of Paul Bley and Jimmy Giuffre at their most energetic.

But as if that weren't enough in itself, this double bill also presents Stephen in a duo with the great saxophonist Trevor Watts, one of the pioneers of free improvisation in the UK, and still passionate about making music that is simultaneously impressionistic and rhythmically intense. Trevor was last on Tyneside in February 2013 with pianist Veryan Weston, and it was clear that this format allows him the greatest freedom to exercise a musical imagination forged over five decades of ceaseless creativity. This new partnership with Stephen Grew promises to unleash more brilliance from a master at the top of his game.

Tickets for this gig are available from the Lit & Phil (0191 232 0192), Reflex CD (0191 260 3246) or online from
