There are so many great piano trios in today's jazz world that it's really tough for newcomers to stand out. But when we were approached by Swiss trio VEIN and listened to some of their music, we didn't have any doubts - we had to bring them to Tyneside.

Actually they're not completely new; they've been playing together since 2006, and have released eight albums, but their only previous UK appearance was in London, where they were joined by sax icon Greg Osby (in itself a testament to their quality). Comprising twin brothers Florian and Michael Arbenz on drums and piano, with Thomas Lähns on bass, they deliver music that is simultaneously hyperactive and subtle, frequently humorous, and all played with a sparkling technique and a unique sort of energy that makes even the most complex compositions seem absolutely natural. Within the trio format there are all sorts of little surprises; unexpected duet and solo passages, and rhythmic shifts so nuanced that it takes a moment to realise they've happened, with the whole performance underpinned by a sure-footed and forward looking swing.

The trio's most recent album was entitled 'Vote for VEIN: three people can't be wrong!". The Jazz North East committee's vote was unanimous - let's book them. And when you've heard them, we're convinced that they'll get your vote as well.
