Jamil Sheriff Trio + Josh Kemp Quartet  -  Thu Feb 06, 2014  |  08:00 pm
Admission £ 10.00 ( £ 8.00 concessions)
Leeds-based pianist Jamil Sheriff has been a highly regarded figure on the northern and wider national jazz scene for more than a decade, and has made many Tyneside appearances with other people's bands (most recently last July, with Matt Anderson's Wild Flower Quintet), yet this is the first time he comes to us as leader of his own group. It's a long overdue treat, because not only is he an unfailingly imaginative and thoughtful player in his own right, but he also writes great melodic tunes that seem custom built to bring out the best in all three members of his fine trio.

For the second set of this gig, the trio is joined by saxophonist Josh Kemp, who takes over the leadership of the group to play tunes from his recently issued album 'Tone Poetry'. His approach, notable for melodic inventiveness and a warm and lyrical feel to his improvisations, is perfectly in accord with that of Jamil's trio, and it's no surprise that he has chosen them to back him of the northern leg of his national tour. This is London meets Leeds in a perfect display of musical compatibility.
