Wild Flower Quintet  -  Thu Jul 18, 2013  |  08:00 pm
Wild Flower is a celebration of the music of Wayne Shorter, who over more than 50 years has firmly established himself as one of the most important saxophonists in jazz history. He has worked across the whole spectrum of post-bop approaches, from Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers through Bitches Brew era Miles Davis, then more than a decade as co-leader of Weather Report, and on to the superb quartet which he still leads at the age of 79.

Along the way he has built up a magnificent body of work and has inspired a host of younger players, among them the acclaimed Leeds-based saxophonist Matt Anderson who has developed this Wild Flower project to capture Shorter's sound and approach.

Matt is joined in the venture by trumpeter Laura Jurd, who in the space of just a couple of years has become one of the most talked about and sought-after young jazz musicians in the UK, and by pianist Jamil Sheriff, who's the principle lecturer in jazz at Leeds College of Music, and certainly knows how to practice what he preaches. With a red hot bass and drum team of Sam Vicary and Dave Walsh, this is a tremendous quintet who would be worth hearing whatever they play. With a repertoire drawn from the great Wayne Shorter, they become quite simply unmissable.
