Francois Bourassa | Back

Canadian pianist François Bourassa (the son of one-time Québec Premier Robert Bourassa) made his jazz breakthrough in 1985, taking the New Talent Prize at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. At that time his playing was characterised by a bellicose attack that was riveting in its intensity but left little space for his more sensitive side.

In the years since then he has lost none of his passion, but his musical palette has widened considerably, embracing everything from hugely accomplished improv through groove-driven passages to classically-tinged meditations. Winner of countless prizes, including, in 2007, the prestigious Oscar Peterson Award, Bourassa is now widely regarded as one of Canada's leading modern jazz composer-pianists.
