Han Bennink | Back

Born near Amsterdam in 1942, the son of a classical percussionist, Han Bennink played drums and clarinet in his teens, and by the early 1960s was already building a reputation as an outstandingly versatile drummer, able to play in virtually any style, and with an underlying swing reminiscent of his hero Kenny Clarke. As the '60s progressed he became increasing involved in the emergent European free music scene, being one of the co-founders with Misha Mengelberg and Willem Breuker of the influential Instant Composers Pool.

In the past 40 years he has worked with every significant figure in freely improvised music, being in huge demand both for his superb musicianship and for the sense of drama and humour that he brings to his performances.
