THE NEWCASTLE JAZZ FESTIVAL RETURNS

The last Newcastle Jazz Festival was way back in 1995, and we've often been asked if there was any chance of reviving it. Well, Jazz North East hasn't felt able to do this alone, but we're really pleased to be joining with other Tyneside promoters and venues in the creation of a new 'Newcastle Festival of Jazz and Improvised Music', with funding assistance from Arts Council England, and with Wesley Stephenson pulling the whole thing together as Festival Director.

Running from Thursday 28th September to Sunday 1st October, this inaugural Festival will build on an existing pattern of concerts including the Lit & Phil's Friday lunchtime presentations, the Jazz Café's Friday night gigs, and Sunday night's 'On the Outside' events at the Bridge, but with the funding used to add further events, and to engage a cornucopia of exciting, high profile musicians such as Zoe Rahman, Laura Jurd and Troyka. There will be an international dimension as well, with - amongst others - brilliant French guitarist Julien Desprez and dynamic Swiss trio Schnellertollermeier.

That's just the tip of a substantial iceberg. In all there will be a total of 11 concerts, workshops and film showings, with the involvement of around 50 musicians. Festival fliers, with the full details, are being distributed around the region, but if you can't lay your hands on one, just contact Jazz North East through the 'Contact' button on this website, and we'll arrange to get one to you.
