VOTED ‘Best New Band’ at the 2010 La Defence National Jazz Festival, young quartet IRèNE are yet another adventurous group to emerge from the hotbed of the Coax Collectif, the Parisian equivalent of London’s LOOP Collective. In guitarist Julien Desprez they share a member with the trio ‘Q’, who have played a couple of stunning Jazz North East gigs over the past year, but the inclusion of two saxophones and a substantial degree of electronic manipulation gives IRèNE an entirely distinctive sound.

One of the many things that mark the band out as highly original is the very variety of approach that they bring to their music, with a great emphasis on nuance and texture. One piece might feature bellicose saxes, thrashy guitar and pummelling drums, while another piece (or even a different section of the same tune) will move into impressionistic territory, with Clément Édouard’s electronics providing a swirling backdrop to Deprez’s pointillistic guitar. From raucous skronk to fragile beauty, this is a quartet that provides plenty of light and shade, the beautiful and the brutal.

Their only previous UK appearance was at the 2011 London Jazz Festival, so it’s great to be able to bring them for the first time to the Tyneside audience.

This gig is a co-promotion between Schmazz and Jazz North East, and made possible with the help of funding from SACEM
