A Very Long Splinter  -  Sun Jul 22, 2012  |  01:00 pm
The Sunday night ‘Splinter’ sessions at the Bridge Hotel have become a key part of the local scene, serving as a showcase for the best young bands from the North East and further afield. This final gig before the Summer break celebrates in style with an all-day extravaganza that starts at 1.00pm with the Lindsay Hannon Plus, follows through with such favourites as the Paul Edis Sextet, Wilbur’s Fate, Zoë Gilby, and ends the night around 10.30pm with Legohead.

Jazz North East chip in with an extended set from South African born saxophonist Ntshuks Bonga, who draws his inspiration from such great figures as the late Dudu Pukwana and Chris McGregor, with an approach that leans towards freedom but with a foothold in the rhythm and melody of township jazz. We’ll be teaming him up with one of his regular collaborators, popular vibes master Corey Mwamba, and also stirring our own bass titan Andy Champion into the mix. Ntshuks is likely to start his set around 7.00pm, but the whole day looks set to be a feast of great jazz.

The provisional timetable for the day is:
1.00pm: Lindsay Hannon Plus
2.00pm: Paul Edis Sextet
3.00pm: Ex Extreme
4.00pm: Wilbur's Fate
5.00pm: Zoë Gilby & Andy Champion
6.00pm: Mark Williams Trio
7.00pm: Ntshuks Bonga & Friends
8.30pm: Legohead
