When weʼre considering booking regional bands, itʼs all too easy just to think of the North East. Yet thereʼs a thriving jazz scene across the Pennines, with Carlisle-based Fusionhead leading the charge, and we're glad to be bringing them over for what we think may be their first ever gig on Tyneside.

The band pride themselves on tight arrangements and creative improvisations over groove based jazz in a variety of styles, although such 1970s funk/soul bands as the Crusaders are the major model. But sax player and leader Roz Sluman also cites Paul Desmond, Cannonball Adderley, David Sanborn, and The Brecker Brothers as influences, and itʼs apparent in an approach which embraces both cool melodic playing and hard bop.

Blues is also evident with the gritty vocals of bassist Alex Green, while Nick Rimmer throws in a range of keyboard sounds to vary the texture of the set. And no matter what the vibe, Kenny Reed is both the powerhouse and the provider of subtle colouration at the drum kit. With a mix of home grown originals, jazz standards, and some well known, and some lesser known covers, this is grooving, accessible jazz for a Sunday night.
