With its combination of vibes, bass guitar and drums, Busnoys has drawn comparison with Gary Burton's celebrated '60s group with Steve Swallow, but leader Martin Pyne's imaginative use of electronic processing also takes the sound into unexpected contemporary territories.

The links with the jazz tradition, however, are always there, with a repertoire that is mainly based around Pyne's own striking compositions, but also takes in tunes from Thelonious Monk and other jazz standards. The vibes have been making quite a comeback in UK jazz in recent years, and Jazz North East gigs have featured some of its outstanding new exponents such as Jim Hart and Corey Mwamba. Now, with Martin Pyne and Busnoys, we're proud to be showcasing yet another of the innovative approaches to an instrument that's come a long way since the great Lionel Hampton.
