Paul Edis Sextet - CD Launch  -  Fri Mar 02, 2012  |  08:00 pm
Pianist Paul Edis has been one of the key figures in the North East jazz renaissance over the past five years, both as organiser and player, yet he has not previously recorded under his own name. So when we heard that his excellent sextet had a CD ready for release on the Jazz Action label, we jumped at the chance to help out with the launch.

Paul first unveiled the sextet in September 2008, and it was immediately apparent that the format was a great vehicle for his composing and arranging skills. Since then it has made regular appearances around the region, with a steadily growing book of original tunes, and an ever closer empathy between the six musicians, all of them in the first rank of North East players. At the core of the band is Paul's regular trio with Mick Shoulder on bass and Adam Sinclair on drums, but the front line of reedsman Graeme Wilson, trumpeter Graham Hardy and trombonist Chris Hibbard add a massive punch and some highly inventive soloing.

This is a classic modern jazz line-up, reminiscent of such great bands as Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, and it's clear that the whole sextet are steeped in that tradition, but with enough of a contemporary edge to keep the whole thing fresh. It's great that the music has finally found its way on to CD (appropriately named 'There Will Be Time'), and a privilege for Jazz North East to be able to help launch it into an expectant world.
