Sheffield based Martin Archer has been described by critic Duncan Heining as having “an intriguing and transformative aesthetic . . . whatever enters his world comes out changed, if not utterly, then beautifully." So it’s no wonder that adventurous improvising musicians relish working with him, and the Deep Tide Quartet is an inspirational example of this.

Trumpeter Kim Macari, pianist Laura Cole, and improvising percussionist Walt Shaw (who is also an accomplished abstract painter - "in my head they are one and the same process”) have all made previous appearances for Jazz North East, and here join Martin for an exercise in open ended jazz playing with no stylistic limits. Written scores, graphic scores, and free improvisation – but improvisation which contains its own spontaneously generated melody and structure – all find their way into the mix.

Whichever direction the music takes, it is based on concentrated and careful listening between the musicians, and remains rooted in, and building on the tradition of pure jazz skill.

"If the group have a signature it’s their use of breathing space, with musicians, all exceptional listeners”
Mike Barnes (THE WIRE)
