Mark Williams Trio + Jeff Herr Corporation  -  Sun Oct 20, 2019  |  07:15 pm
Admission £ 10.00 ( £ 8.00 concessions)
A great double bill, bringing together two of our favourite trios from either side of the North Sea!

Originally from Belfast, guitarist Mark Williams has been a leading light on the Tyneside jazz scene for nearly two decades. Having made his mark as a sideman, he established his trio in 2009 in order to showcase his own compositional and improvisational talents, and it’s a project that has gone from strength to strength. Their second album, ‘Last Bus to Bensham’, was released in late 2017, and received widespread critical acclaim.

One of the people who heard Mark’s new album was Luxembourg drummer Jeff Herr. Jeff’s ‘Corporation’ trio has played two previous Jazz North East gigs, winning plenty of Tyneside fans for his energetic yet sensitive drumming and the brilliant interplay with saxophonist Maxime Bender and French bassist Laurent Payfert. Since their last Newcastle appearance, in January 2018, the trio has released a stunning new album ‘Manifesto’, so we felt that it was time to arrange another visit.

But this is more than just two sets from two bands. The Corporation’s ‘Manifesto’ album features guest appearances from New York guitarist Adam Rogers, and - having heard Mark Williams’ playing - Jeff reckoned that Mark could fulfil the same role in live performances. So for a couple of numbers Mark will become an honorary Corporation member . . . making the concert a fine demonstration of European cooperation!

”Jeff Herr is the terrific driving force behind a trio that is a direct descendant of Sonny Rollins”
