For a second year Jazz North East is pleased to be hosting a performance from the Durham University Big Band.

DUBB is a fully-auditioned, student-run, eighteen-piece outfit drawn not just from music students, but from the finest jazz musicians across the University’s colleges and departments. Throughout the years, DUBB have strived to test the boundaries of the traditional big band idiom, and their recent EP 'twenty' (celebrating the band’s twentieth anniversary) is a project that successfully expresses this philosophy and encapsulates all the things that make DUBB unique. With a large repertoire ranging from traditional big band swing through to hip hop, latin and neo-soul, DUBB are incredibly versatile both in their musical approach, and also in the range of venues and settings in which they are happy to perform.

Although the membership of a student band inevitably moves on from year to year, DUBB has been remarkably consistent in its ambitious musical attitude, something that has been recognised by performances at multiple university and college events as well as internationally renowned jazz clubs across the country, and by the winning of many awards at recent editions of the Great North Big Band Competition. The current edition of the band maintains that high and exciting standard, and it’s great to have them at the Black Swan for what is likely to be a celebratory final gig before the end of the academic year.
