Federica Michisanti's Trioness  -  Sun May 26, 2019  |  08:00 pm
Admission £ 10.00 ( £ 8.00 concessions)
Occasionally Jazz North East comes across musicians, previously unknown to us, but who make such an immediate impression that we have no hesitation about booking them. That’s certainly the case with Italian bass player Federica Michisanti; we heard her at Rotterdam’s InJazz Festival in June 2018, and within an hour were talking to her about ways of bringing her ‘Trioness’ group to Newcastle.

Federica was born in Rome, and studied at the city’s Università della Musica, where her talent quickly became apparent, leading to a raft of awards, amongst them the prestigious SIAE Prize in 2018, and being voted Best New Talent by critics at Musica Jazz magazine. The approach of her trio, with piano and reeds but no drummer, has been compared with the great collaboration between Jimmy Giuffre, Paul Bley and Steve Swallow back in the 1960s, particularly in the combination of relaxed melodicism with an underlying creative intensity - music for the heart and the head. But the echoes of the Giuffre trio are just that; this is music that in Federica’s compositions and the playing of all three members is very much their own, distinctive and beautiful.

This Bridge Hotel gig is one of only two in the UK, the other being at the Manchester International Jazz Festival - and it’s a great pleasure for us that those initial discussions in Rotterdam have come to fruition, and that we can share our enjoyment with Tyneside jazz lovers.
