In October it was a real stimulus to have American multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee join us as guest mentor for our monthly improvisers workshop. And this month we get different insights from visiting bassist Emma Smith.

As well as being a superb performer on her instrument, Emma is the instigator of the 'Bitches Brew' performance series, focusing on the creative imagination of women musicians, initially in her native Scotland but increasingly curating sessions in the rest of the UK and Europe. Indeed, she will be presenting exactly such a session later in the day, but first this is an opportunity to share her vision with our own local musicians.

These Workshops at the Bridge have proved to be a real stimulus to the creative development of local musicians, with the participants taking the lessons into their own performances, and the workshop group itself testing out its ideas in concert. Using a range of sources as inspiration - texts, graphic scores, game theory, or unfettered free improvisation - players from diverse musical backgrounds have found common ground in pushing their creative boundaries.

In addition to Emma regular workshop leaders John Pope and Wes Stephenson will be on hand to help shape the sessions, but any participants are welcome to bring along ideas to be tried out in a relaxed environment. Relaxed, but also very stimulating . . . there's no charge to take part, so if you feel that you’d like to try stretching yourself musically, with guidance from one of the best in the world, this is the place to be.
