The Olie Brice Quintet  -  Thu Oct 18, 2018  |  08:00 pm
Admission £ 10.00 ( £ 8.00 concessions)
Bassist Olie Brice has played some memorable gigs for Jazz North East in recent years, in contexts as diverse as Loz Speyer's Inner Space Music and a recent improv encounter with Portuguese trumpeter Luís Vicente. But his 2016 Jazz Café appearance with his own quintet revealed yet another side to his talent - his outstanding ability as a composer and arranger.

Since that performance the quintet has released its second album, ‘Day After Day’, confirming that the group continues, individually and collectively, to make giant strides. Which is hardly surprising when you consider what a great group it is. On mainly original tunes which combine Olie's love for melody with plenty of space for free-ranging improvisation, the three horn front line of Alex Bonney on cornet, George Crowley on tenor sax, and Mike Fletcher on alto and the rarely heard C-Melody sax provide a subtle blend of gently textured harmonies and open but measured intensity. With Olie's own compelling bass playing (Charles Mingus and Charlie Haden are the masters who most readily come to mind), and the impeccable drumming of former Stan Getz sidesman Jeff Williams, this is a band that brilliantly balances the straightahead and the free, and unfailingly enthrals fans of both approaches.

Tickets are available from the Jazz Café (0191 222 9882), Reflex CD (0191 260 3246) or online from
