HTrio with Nate Wooley + Joe McPhee & Chris Corsano  -  Sun Oct 07, 2018  |  07:45 pm
The climax to the Newcastle Festival of Jazz & Improvised Music brings us a superb double bill, with three of America’s finest artists - Nate Wooley, Joe McPhee and Chris Corsano - performing up close and personal in the intimate space of the Bridge Hotel.

Trumpeter Wooley has, over the past twenty years, developed a distinctive technical and aesthetic approach to the horn that has made him one of the most in-demand players on the Brooklyn scene and beyond, working regularly with the likes of John Zorn, Anthony Braxton, Ken Vandermark and Evan Parker. He lines up here alongside HTrio, who played an outstanding gig at the Bridge in December 2016, with its members delving into their contrasting backgrounds in jazz, contemporary classical music and rock, to breath fresh life into the tenor sax/bass/drums format. This will be Nate's first ever appearance on Tyneside, and he could hardly be in better company.

The other half of the bill brings together two giants of the free music world in multi-instrumentalist McPhee and drummer Corsano. Joe is a veteran of New York's free jazz revolution of the 1960s, now in his late 70s but still seeking out fresh challenges - his performances in completely new combinations were a highlight of our 2008 ‘On the Outside’ Festival. Chris is equally up for anything, working at the intersections of collective improvisation, free jazz, avant-rock, and noise music so it’s no surprise that he and Joe have found common ground, touring and recording as a duo for the past twelve years. Their music flies from ballad to spontaneous combustion and back again, an empathetic duo-exchange forever rooted in deep-listening.
