North East trio Archipelago have spent the last few years working hard on developing their music and growing their audience, winning over fans around the country with their adventurous performances and honest, anything-goes compositions. So, when their leader Faye MacCalman was awarded a prestigious Peter Whittingham development award at the beginning of the year, they set about finding something a little different to do with that funding.

The resulting project, ‘Between Waves', explored and celebrates the diverse voices of modern female artists and the powers of collaboration and communication. Taking applications from women all around the UK, Archipelago invited four selected artists to travel to Newcastle, collaborating with each visitor on new music over intensive two-day residencies throughout September and October. The resulting work was then premiered during a specially organised series of concerts at Newcastle’s Cobalt Studios, with the music recorded as a document of everything learned and shared during this ambitious scheme.

And this concert with Jazz North East celebrates the grand finale for the project (and also for JNE’s 2018 ‘Women Make Music’ series), with a performance that will include guest appearances from two of the collaborators, Lisette Autun and Fran Bundey, and the launch of the ‘Between Waves’ digital EP - download codes will be given to audience members on the night.
