‘Bitches Brew’ is a night of music from some of the best female instrumentalists around. Curator Emma Smith regularly presents a gloriously eclectic night of music which celebrates the variety of talent playing, pushing the boundaries of creativity. It's a great pleasure to welcome her to Newcastle to co-promote an evening of music in association with our ongoing 'Women Make Music’ series.

Emma herself performs with percussionist Signy Jakobsdottir to draw on influences from Gamelan to groove, creating hypnotic soundscapes through which they tread a path that has you dancing one minute and meditating the next. Constantly looking for space and resisting the urge to fill it, the duo invites you into a world without clutter where bass lines breathe and bells bring you back into the moment.

Cliona Cassidy, a member of the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra, is an experimental vocalist, improviser and composer, an opera singer and a folk/pop singer-songwriter. For this performance she teams up with fellow GIO member George Burt (the night’s solitary male interloper), a Falkirk-based guitarist who started out playing in folkclubs, pit bands for local drama societies, jazz bands and backing groups for singers, but has gone on to become one of Europe’s finest free improvisers, playing some stunning gigs for Jazz North East with the likes of Mat Maneri and Ntshuks Bonga.

Finally J Frisco is a trio of soprano saxophone, electric guitar, keyboards and vocals; they create improvised music that is drawn from their emotions, the world, political and gender issues. They aim to engage and inspire their audience through crossing genre and art boundaries, taking their listeners on a journey that challenges both their own and their listeners’ perceptions, pushing each performance to new levels.
