Pianist Nikki Iles came to prominence in the early 1990s as a founder member of the hugely innovative Creative Jazz Orchestra, building relationships with leading jazz artists from both sides of the Atlantic.

One of the most enduring of those relationships has been with the great UK saxophonist Stan Sulzmann, with whom she has developed a friendship based on a shared love of melody and an enthusiasm for re-visiting favourite tunes in the musical intimacy of the duo setting. They first unveiled the fruits of this collaboration in their 1996 album ‘Treasure Trove’, but - despite continuing to regularly work together - it has taken more than 20 years for the follow-up to appear. But it was worth waiting for - ‘Stardust’, issued on the Jellymould label, features a clutch of beautifully interpreted standards plus original compositions from each of them, and it’s this material that they’ll be exploring at the Lit & Phil.

”Almost every track is a delicate and perfectly judged rendition of a standard . . . the very gentleness of the arrangements throughout underlines the deep love and knowledge these two have for jazz melody.”. London Jazz News.

Tickets are available from the Lit & Phil (0191 232 0192), Reflex CD (0191 260 3246) or online from seetickets.com

This concert is promoted in association with the Newcastle Festival of Jazz and Improvised Music, and is a 'Women Make Music' event financially assisted by the PRS Foundation
