Back in May New York saxophonist Tony Malaby dropped by our monthly Improvisers Workshop and was loud in his praise of what he saw and heard. But now we’re going one better as the brilliant American multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee joins us as guest mentor for this October workshop.

One of the key members of the New York free jazz revolution of the 1960s, Joe continues to develop his own creative energy, and will be playing an unmissable evening concert with drummer Chris Corsano as part of this year’s Newcastle Festival of Jazz & Improvised Music. But he has also earned a reputation as one of the most charismatic teachers on the progressive scene, so getting him to bring his inspirational guidance to the afternoon workshop is a wonderful opportunity.

These monthly Workshops at the Bridge have proved to be a real stimulus to the creative development of local musicians, with the participants taking the lessons into their own performances, and the workshop group itself testing out its ideas in concert. Using a range of sources as inspiration - texts, graphic scores, game theory, or unfettered free improvisation - players from diverse musical backgrounds have found common ground in pushing their creative boundaries.

In addition to Joe, regular workshop leaders John Pope and Wes Stephenson will be on hand to help shape the sessions, but any participants are welcome to bring along ideas to be tried out in a relaxed environment. Relaxed, but also very stimulating . . . there's no charge to take part, so if you feel that you’d like to try stretching yourself musically, with guidance from one of the best in the world, this is the place to be.
