Daniel Karlsson Trio  -  Fri Sep 28, 2018  |  08:00 pm
Admission £ 8.00 ( £ 6.00 concessions)
Heaven knows how many piano trios there are in the world of jazz, but it’s certainly a vast number, and it’s not easy to stand out from the crowd. Yet it’s a trick that Sweden’s Daniel Karlsson Trio pull off with ease.

While comparisons can be misleading, there are good reasons why Karlsson’s work has been favourably related to that of the late Esbjorn Svensson (AllAboutJazz has called him “a worthy successor”); his catchy compositions draw on classical and folkloric influences, but with strong rhythmic vamps and a lyrical impulse that provide a compelling momentum. His companions in the trio are equally brimming with ideas, and the dynamics between the three musicians are brilliantly balanced. So while the EST comparisons seem inevitable, this is a trio with its own distinctive and engaging personality.

And it’s a quality that has been widely acknowledged. Since their 2013 debut album ‘Das Taxibåt’ they have been showered with awards, including Swedish Radio’s ‘Jazz Group of the Year’, jazz magazine OJ’s ‘Golden Disc’, and a highly prestigious Swedish Grammy. The only surprise is that, while they’ve toured extensively in mainland Europe, they’ve not previously visited the UK - so this Jazz Café gig is a long overdue treat.

Tickets are available from the Jazz Café (0191 222 9882), Reflex CD (0191 260 3246) or online from
