One of our most intriguing gigs of recent years came in March 2017 with the duo ‘Vyamanikal’ featuring Tom Challenger on saxophones and Kit Downes on harmonium and his own home-made ‘lap-cello’. It opened up fascinating soundscapes, so it’s a real treat to have them back at the Bridge, this time joined by singer Ingebjørg Loe Bjørnstad in the trio ‘Elt’.

It’s easy to see why the collaboration was attractive, as Ingebjørg’s debut album ‘Haem’, in duo with accordionist Frode Haltli, sees her developing haunting tonalities that seem tailor made for the harmonium/sax combination. Although clearly influenced by the folk and traditional music of her native Norway, there’s also a soulful edge to her voice that sets up subtly elusive links to a whole range of jazz vocal approaches - an area which Tom and Kit explore with profound understanding and sympathy. This is beautiful music, floatingly ethereal yet grounded in an intricately textured jazz sensibility.

The pairing of Tom Ward and Adam Fairhall has an equally tangential ink to the jazz tradition. Tom’s work in the Madwort Sax Quartet and Adam’s solo album ‘Friendly Ghosts’ are both testament to an encyclopaedic understanding of the music’s history, but this is just a starting point for creative explorations that can go in any number of directions, at times quietly meditative, at others torrentially hyperactive. The duo was born when their names were drawn from the hat at a London improv night in 2015; the rapport was immediate, and will surely be in evidence at this tremendous double bill.
