Milne-Glendinning Band + Alice Grace & Pawel Jedrzejewski  -  Fri Jul 27, 2018  |  08:00 pm

Collaborations between vocalists and guitarists have a long history in jazz, and - when there is real empathy between the musicians - they have produced some sublime music. We’re fortunate in the North East to have some outstanding examples of the format, and this gig, part of our 2018 ‘Women Make Music’ series, showcases two of them.

The partnership of Alice Grace and Pawel Jedrzejewski has been forged relatively recently in the hothouse of the Strictly Smokin’ Big Band, with both of them being regular members of that hugely popular outfit. In that context it’s normal to hear each of them featured against the aural backdrop of the full, fiercely swinging orchestra, but this duo outing provides an opportunity for more intimate readings of a range of standards and judiciously selected pop material . . . although there’ll undoubtedly be some full-on up-tempo excursions in the mix!

The teaming of vocalist Debra Milne and guitarist Steve Glendinning goes back much further, at least to early 2012, with frequent appearances both as a duo and in Debra’s larger Ensemble. Throughout that period they have written songs together, and have now decided to focus on what has become a substantial body of original material, with a new band that bears both their names. The addition of bassist Katy Trigger and percussionist Nik Alevroyiannis expands the sound palette, but it’s the sympathetic interplay between Debra and Steve that’s at the heart of their approach . . . so, not exactly a duo, more a duo plus.
