Sonny Simmons, with Saw, Jasnoch & Collins  -  Thu Sep 25, 2008  |  08:30 pm
Admission £ 5.00 ( £ 3.00 concessions)
A contemporary of Oernette Coleman and regular playing partner of the late Eric Dolphy, Sonny Simmons is one of the pioneering figures of free jazz. He dropped out of the music in the 1970s, disillusioned with the lack of playing opportunities for creative musicians, but re-emerged in the mid-90s, linking up with younger musicians and playing with undiminished passion and imagination. For this gig he's working with three of the leaders of Sheffield's free music scene, steeped in jazz but also drawing on the more abstract approach of European free improvisation. A gig that is simultaneously part of jazz history and absolutely up to the minute.
