The last few years have seen a remarkable resurgence of jazz activity in Durham, and a great deal of this can be credited to the efforts of the Durham University Jazz Society, and in particular to the University Big Band, which has turned into a regular production line for quality musicians.

But when something’s as good as this, it’s unfair to keep it to yourself, so it’s good to see them taking their show on the road. The band played a Jazz Café gig in June of last year, and by the end of the night had made such an impression that the audience gave them a standing ovation. So when they asked Jazz North East if we could organise a repeat performance this year, there wasn’t a moment’s hesitation from us. We know a good thing when we see (and hear) it.

Our enthusiasm is based not just on the quality of the musicianship, high though that is, both in the ensemble work and the contributions of some fine soloists. The DUBB is also notable for a beautifully balanced but eclectic repertoire, with a mix of classic charts from the likes of Count Basie, Neil Hefti and Bill Holman alongside more contemporary material, including sophisticatedly storming arrangements of pop tunes. This is a band that knows how to swing, but with a few twists and turns along the way.

It’s in the nature of University bands that there’s a regular turnover of personnel, and this gig - at the end of the academic year - will mark a farewell performance for some of the members. So maybe we can expect the exuberance of an end of term party . . . and (great news) one to which we’re all invited.

Tickets are available from the Jazz Café (0191 222 9882), Reflex CD (0191 260 3246) or online from
