Mick Beck has played on Tyneside several times over the past decade, usually as a support for somebody else, and on every single occasion he’s stolen the show and left audiences slack-jawed in astonishment. His scorching tenor playing combines the heart-on-the-sleeve passion of Albert Ayler with the technical adventurousness of Evan Parker, while his excursions on the bassoon bring a completely new dimension to this normally staid and rather unwieldy orchestral instrument. Add an assortment of whistles and balloons, and you begin to think that this is where the spirit of the late Rahsaan Roland Kirk has taken up residence.

Phil Marks is an old sparring partner of Mick’s, although this is the first time they’ve actually toured together. His drumming is unfailingly free – almost abstract at times – but it’s also drivingly propulsive, leading one critic to describe it as “James Brown meets the spirit of modernism”! This is duo music that is fiery, quirky, and – above all - enormous fun.

This gig is presented by Jazz North East as part of it's 'On the Outside' programme, with financial assistance from Newcastle City Council.
