The Strictly Smokin’ Big Band has in recent years been one of the well deserved successes of jazz in the North East.

That success has been built largely on a tight and punchy ensemble sound, delivering an ever expanding repertoire of tunes and arrangements from big band specialists around the world. But within its ranks there are a host of individual musicians writing their own material, tunes created with smaller units in mind. And this gig at the Jazz Café has been set up by Jazz North East to provide a showcase for these talents.

Over the course of the evening listeners will be treated to small group performances featuring original compositions from trumpeters Michael Lamb and Pete Tanton, saxophonist Jamie Toms, and guitarist Pawel Jedrzejewski. Strictly Smokin’ regulars Graham Don, Michael Whent and Guy Swinton will be in the engine room of the rhythm section, laying down a platform for the front-line players (and chipping in with their own share of inspired solos), and there could well be guest appearances from other members of the big band.

Tickets are available from the Jazz Café (0191 222 9882), Reflex CD (0191 260 3246) or online from seetickets.com
