The Charlotte Glasson Group  -  Thu Jun 21, 2018  |  08:00 pm
Admission £ 10.00 ( £ 8.00 concessions)
When the Charlotte Glasson Group played the Cluny in December 2011, nobody knew quite what to expect. A band whose members between them played all the reeds, flutes, trombone, violin, melodica, musical saw, and much else besides . . . well, this could be a revelation, or it could be vaudevillian excess.

We needn't have worried. It was great, and a fine demonstration of how jazz can be enormously entertaining while still packed with creativity. A subsequent gig in 2014 proved just as rewarding, so it’s with eager anticipation that we welcome this third visit.

Stylistically Charlotte's compositions draw on influences from all around the globe, but she has the vision to combine these into something that is uniquely her own, upbeat and bouncy on the surface but with all sorts of interesting twists and turns as a sub-text. And she uses the enormously varied instrumental resources at her disposal in an unfailingly imaginative way - her own armoury alone contains a small orchestra's worth of sonic possibilities, and when you add in the contributions of such fine players as steel pan virtuoso Mick Hutton, it takes a firm grasp to make it all work.

But let’s not concentrate too much on the extraordinary variety of instruments on show. These are just the means: the end is music that's amongst the most entertaining to be found anywhere on the UK jazz scene, and leaves you thinking not so much "How did they do that?" as "I'm really glad that they did".

Tickets are available from the Jazz Café (0191 222 9882), Reflex CD (0191 260 3246) or online from
