One of the many delights of our 2017 Netherlands all-dayer was the concluding set from guitarist Jasper Stadhouders, bassist Wilbert de Joode and drummer Onno Govaert, a wonderful demonstration of the way that succeeding generations of Dutch improvisers are coming together and learning from each other. Wilbert, who in 2016 was awarded the prestigious ‘Boy Edgar’ prize for outstanding achievement, has been a pillar of the vibrant Amsterdam scene for more than 30 years, while Jasper and Onno have only really made their mark within the past five years - yet they instantaneously found a shared musical language.

Reedsman Toby Delius has also become a Newcastle favourite, having delivered two fiery sessions at the Bridge with Olie Brice and Mark Sanders. Born in Oxford, and now living in Berlin, he built his reputation during a long residency in Amsterdam, and remains a leading member of Holland’s great ICP Orchestra.

So, when Jasper Stadhouders contacted us to say that the trio was teaming up with Toby, and would we like to give them a gig, it was like all our birthdays coming at once, and we didn’t need asking twice. In what is an increasingly adventurous European jazz scene, the Netherlands approach - combining a love of melody with a fearless freedom - remains utterly distinctive. It’s great to be ‘Going Dutch’ again!
