Now here’s a mouth-watering prospect, linking one of America’s most exciting saxophonists with two of the leading members of the young French scene.

Drummer Sylvain Darrifourcq is a well established favourite of Jazz North East; he first played for us with the Emile Parisien Quartet, and has been back on half a dozen subsequent occasions with different groups, each time demonstrating his percussive imagination and versatility. So when he told us that he was putting together a new trio with Tony Malaby and Richard Bonnet, we had no hesitation in saying “We’ll have some of that”!

Malaby is a less familiar figure on Tyneside, his only previous visit being with Lucian Ban’s ‘Enescu Re-imagined’ project in 2011. But his reputation as a tenor and soprano saxophonist with a distinctive pleading tone, moving seamlessly between structured and free playing, has been forged over twenty years at the forefront of the New York scene.

Completing the trio, Richard Bonnet is a completely new face for us, although plenty of our French friends have sung his praises. Frequently using prepared guitar, his playing is packed with surprises, combining a grounding in the blues (he cites the legendary Robert Johnson as an influence) with unfettered radical abandon.

So, an intriguing combination of three outstanding players, each bringing their own ingredients to the mix. Very tasty!
