Jazz de Luxe : Part One  -  Sun Jan 21, 2018  |  02:00 pm
Jazz North East has recently begun each year with an all day extravaganza focusing on the jazz of a single European country. In 2016 it was France, in 2017 the Netherlands . . . and now we turn the spotlight on Luxembourg.

For a nation with a population barely half that of Tyne & Wear, Luxembourg possesses a remarkable wealth of great jazz talent. What’s more, there’s a wonderfully broad range of approaches, from the rhythmic grooves of drummer Jeff Herr’s Corporation, via the witty interplay of vocalist Sascha Ley and bassist Laurent Payfert, to the exquisite harmonies, lyrical melodies and brilliant use of space from Pol Belardi’s Force. In fact think of the diversity of today’s jazz scene, and Luxembourg provides outstanding examples; the five bands we’ve invited to this showcase reflect that rich variety.

Part of the vitality of the scene undoubtedly derives from its links with surrounding countries, and we’re keen to add to the mix, so, alongside the visiting bands, we’re giving a slot to Tyneside’s acclaimed trio Archipelago, and, over the course of afternoon and evening sessions we’ll feature a mix of established groups and newly created combinations. We expect these to be a revelation . . . but that’s a term that could be applied to the whole day. Jazz de Luxe is full of surprises, and we’re proud to be unveiling them at this great event.

2.00 - 2.45pm : Archipelago
3.00 - 4.05pm : Maxime Bender/David Fettmann/Jérôme Klein + Sascha Ley & Laurent Payfert
4.20 - 5.25pm : Manu Codjida & Faye MacCalman + Pol Belardi’s Force

Tickets for each session cost £12.00 or £10.00 concessions, but there's a saving on all day tickets, which are priced at £20.00 / £17.00 concessions.

You can get your tickets from the Lit & Phil (0191 232 0192), Reflex Records (0191 260 3246) or online from seetickets.com
