Riviera Quartet : Album Launch  -  Thu Mar 15, 2018  |  08:00 pm
Admission £ 6.00
The last time we booked the Riviera Quartet was as one half of a double bill, alongside Manchester’s left-field trio Early Nite. It was an interesting contrast and one that actually worked remarkably well - certainly the audience seemed to enjoy both sets equally.

But it also whetted our appetite to hear more of Riviera’s distinctive take on the straightahead tradition . . . including leader Pete Tanton’s entry for the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest (much too good to be successful!). And now that appetite can be satisfied as we host the launch of the band’s eponymous debut CD - an event for which their many admirers have been clamouring for some time.

The quartet’s main inspiration is the cool, cinematic jazz of the 1960s, with blues, bossa and bebop all stirred into the mix, but the music is nearly all original, and in the hands of such talented players as guitarist Mark Williams, bassist John Pope, drummer Russ Morgan and Pete Tanton himself on trumpet and flugelhorn, there’s never any sense of déjà entendu. On the contrary, this is music which, despite its mainstream roots, sounds unfailingly fresh . . . new and tasty wine in interestingly re-fashioned old bottles.

Admission to this gig is just six pounds, but a tenner also gets you a copy of the new CD . . . a bargain in anybody’s book!

Tickets for this gig are available from Reflex CDs (0191 260 3246) or online from
