It seems a long time ago that Jazz North East organised the ‘On the Outside’ festivals of free improvisation, but the international connections they forged still bring rich rewards . . . and the arrival of New York cello player Daniel Levin is just such a treat.

Daniel was one of the international stars who featured in the 2009 edition of ‘On the Outside’, at a time when he’d recently been described in the Penguin Guide to Jazz as “very much the man to watch”. Our experience certainly confirmed that view, and in the succeeding years he’s gone on to build up a formidable reputation as, to quote a recent review in The Wire, “one of the instrument's most brilliant contemporary practitioners”. We’ve long been looking for an opportunity to bring him back to Tyneside, and we’ve finally cracked it, as he flies in to perform a solo set in what will be his only UK performance at the end of a tour of Scandinavia.

Daniel’s visit will additionally be something of a reunion with Graeme Wilson and Andy Champion, who were also part of that 2009 festival. Now, though, they appear as two thirds of the improvising trio Squeteague - the other member being Scottish drummer Stuart Brown. Stu is possibly best known south of the border for ‘Twisted Toons’, his jazz settings of classic cartoon music, but he’s also been a longtime member of the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra, and it was through GIO links that he called in Graeme and Andy for a gig in Glasgow in May 2017.

It was intended to be a one-off, but the music was so exciting, and the three of them had such fun, that they decided they’d like to do it again. So here’s our chance to share in the fun, as they complete this wonderful double bill.
