For a small nation like Luxembourg, you might think that Jazz North East’s recent all-day showcase at the Lit & Phil had pretty well exhausted the country’s pool of jazz talent. Far from it . . . Dock in Absolute is one more sparkling example from a very rich pool.

Led by pianist Jean-Philippe Koch (who also writes most of the music), the trio was established in 2012 after its members had returned from studies across Europe and the USA, bringing with them influences from genres as diverse as classical to rock, and incorporating them seamlessly into a distinctively fresh jazz sound. And not just fresh, but confident - critic Brian Morton (co-editor of the Penguin Guide to Jazz) has written “What’s immediately striking about the music that comes out of this trio is how formidably certain it is…”.

But ‘distinctive’ and ‘confident’ in no way means music that is inaccessible; their tunes never outstay their welcome, each of them drawing on a shared jazz heritage and delivering a concise variant on their essentially melodic predilictions. Their debut album, released in 2017, was described as “packed with fascinating composition as well as terrific playing. ...You may not have heard them before, but you’ll know them from the first minute of the first track, and every time you hear them thereafter”. The music on the album was honed through extensive touring in Europe and the Far East, yet the trio has never before played in the UK. This gig at the Jazz Café gives us the chance to find just what we’ve been missing.
