Luis Vicente, Olie Brice & Mark Sanders  -  Sun Feb 11, 2018  |  08:00 pm
Admission £ 8.00 ( £ 6.00 concessions)
In the past few years Jazz North East’s contacts with the European scene has seen musicians from all over the continent visiting Newcastle, but somehow we’ve never had a representative from Portugal. But that now changes with the arrival of the brilliant trumpeter Luís Vicente.

Like so many leading young players, Luís has absorbed the languages of free jazz and more structured forms and moves seamlessly between the approaches; American critic Ken Waxman has written that “His brass sensibility calls upon the free playing of Don Cherry and the free bop of Freddie Hubbard in equal measure”. And he also shares with others of his generation an open sensibility that regards musical compatibility rather than nationality as the basis for collaborations. So amongst his many projects are a duo with Finnish electronics whizz Jari Marjamäki, while the quartet ‘Deux Mansions’ includes two of our favourite musicians, the French brothers Théo and Valentin Ceccaldi.

It’s as part of this European network that he comes to the Bridge in the company of bassist Olie Brice and drummer Mark Sanders, who have made frequent appearances for us with a veritable ‘Who’s Who’ of leading improvisers. The three of them have found common ground in working together at continental festivals, but this gig is part of their first ever UK tour as a trio. It’s a wonderful opportunity for the Newcastle audience to be introduced to one of the rising stars of not just Portuguese, not just European, but world jazz.

Tickets for this gig are available from Reflex CDs (0191 260 3246) or online from
