The Unknowns + Zoé Gilby Workshop Group + Improvisers Workshop Ensemble  -  Fri Dec 01, 2017  |  07:45 pm
One of the most significant ways in which jazz develops has always been through jam sessions and workshops, the opportunities for musicians to get together and try out new ideas. This tremendous triple bill is a reflection of just how creative the process can be.

The Unknowns are a group of music students from the International Centre for Music Studies at Newcastle University who came together earlier this year under the guidance of the great Chicago saxophonist Ernest Dawkins. They played a Jazz Café gig back in February, and it was such a success that, even though Ernest has returned to the US, they continue to develop his - and their own - ideas as a group. Their appearance at this gig shows how far they’ve come.

A newer link with the University has come this Autumn, with vocalist Zoë Gilby leading a series of workshops for students, exploring not just classic jazz vocal techniques but also the use of voice as an instrument and experimental work with electronics. Their set at this concert will be the first public demonstration of how the partnership has been evolving.

Finally we have some of the fruits from Jazz North East’s welll established ‘Improvisers Workshop’, held on the first Sunday of every month at the Bridge Hotel. It was always the hope that this initiative would stimulate fresh partnerships and new ways of working, and it has certainly lived up to expectations; a group drawn from regular Workshop participants played a fascinatingly varied set last November, and it’s good to have the opportunity to hear what new tricks they now have up their improvisational sleeves.

This concert is a co-promotion between Jazz North East, the Jazz Café, and ICMuS.
