Biscoe, Pope & Turner  -  Sun Dec 03, 2017  |  07:45 pm
Admission £ 8.00 ( £ 6.00 concessions)
This tremendous improvising threesome first came together four years ago after internationally acclaimed percussionist Roger Turner - visiting Tyneside with his trio Konk Pack - heard Newcastle bassist John Pope as part of the support band, and was impressed enough to suggest that they should play together. The brilliant reeds player Chris Biscoe - who has worked with Roger on and off for something like forty years - was recruited to the cause, so all that was needed was for Jazz North East to organise a performance.

We did just that, and the new trio made its debut at Sage Gateshead in a double bill with the Anglo-French quartet Sonsale. That was a one-off, but it worked so well that we’ve long had it in mind to repeat the experience. It’s taken a while, mainly because Roger is in constant demand overseas (in fact we broached the idea of a reunion when we chanced to bump into him in the Netherlands!), but we’ve finally pulled it together for this final ‘On the Outside’ gig of 2017.

Of course John Pope hasn’t stood still since 2013. Amongst other things he’s one third of the innovative trio Archipelago, selected for Jazz North’s 2017 ‘Northern Line’ roster; his Ornette-tinted sextet was highly praised in a recent issue of ‘Jazzwise’ magazine; and he’s won a place at the prestigious Dutch Impro Academy, working alongside such free jazz titans as Han Bennink and Wilbert de Joode. So the rest of the world is starting to sit up and take notice . . . we’re proud to have played a small part in grabbing their attention, and we’re exceptionally pleased to be recreating a notable step in John’s rise to global recognition!

Tickets for this gig are available from Reflex CDs (0191 260 3246) or online from
