Vocalist Vanessa Rani has played a couple of great Newcastle gigs with her band Manjula, pulling in Portuguese, African and Latin jazz influences. With Sandrani, however, appearing at the Jazz Café as part of Jazz North East’s ‘Women Make Music’ series, the mix is even richer!

Featuring musicians of Indian, English, and Mauritian heritages, the trio creates a truly forward thinking global music that fuses together classical Indian Raag and folk song with Western-style grooves and improvisations. Each of the players is encouraged to contribute ideas from their own backgrounds, so that experimentation and innovation are the building blocks for a sound that is uniquely different yet wholly accessible. Guitarist Joe Harris - with his instrument tuned to Indian intervals - and tabla maestro Upneet Singh provide the South Asian feel. Vanessa Rani herself, fluent in any number of verbal and musical languages, moves seamlessly across the spectrum, sometimes acting as a third instrument in the ensemble, sometimes soaring free in improvised passages over the soundscape.

This is music that transcends categories, creating its own distinctive and utterly enthralling space.

Tickets are available from the Jazz Café (0191 222 9882), Reflex CD (0191 260 3246) or online from
