Back in March 2014 Jazz North East was pleased to support the launch of ‘The Spy’, the debut CD from the Lindsay Hannon Plus. Now we’re equally enthusiastic about hosting the unveiling of the follow-up album, ‘Make Dark Heaven Light’.

During the intervening period Lindsay and her band have made giant strides. Selection for Jazz North’s ‘Northern Line’ roster in 2015 led to a string of bookings across the North, and then - as word of mouth spread the good news - further afield. Before long the jazz press was sitting up and taking notice, with Jazz Journal reporting that “‘Hannon’s voice is soulful, brooding and unselfconscious in its longing, with many of the songs in her set exploring themes of wistfulness and introspection Yet it isn’t all melancholy; Hannon can also swing with the best of them…full-bodied, lyrical vocal… effortlessly riding the beat and coming in to land gracefully at the finish.’

Of course, we in the North East already knew just how good Lindsay is, and how brilliantly she stamps her distinctive mark on a diverse repertoire of original compositions and left-field pop material (Tom Waits, Mark Knopfler and Robert Wyatt all get the Hannon treatment). A changed line-up for the band - guitarist Mark Williams and drummer Russ Morgan joining long established bass playing collaborator John Pope - also promises exciting new departures, leaving us in no doubt that this second album will mark a further advance in Lindsay’s creative development. An unmissable event.

Admission to this gig is just six pounds, but a tenner also gets you a copy of the new CD . . . a bargain in anybody’s book!
