Lilli Unwin Band + Maja Bugge  -  Sun Oct 08, 2017  |  08:00 pm
Admission £ 8.00 ( £ 6.00 concessions)
In a jazz world packed with young vocalists, it’s hard to stand out from the crowd . . . but London-based Lilli Unwin certainly does exactly that. To an ability as an enchanting and soulful singer, composer and arranger who combines a richness of sound with the depth and ability of an instrumentalist, she adds a penchant for intelligent, thought-provoking lyrics.

What’s more, she surrounds herself with some of the finest musicians of her generation; pianist Matt Robinson, bassist Loz Garratt and drummer Corrie Dick (whose own band played a stunning gig at the Bridge in September 2016) are a dream team who, together with Lilli, blend subtle grooves and story-telling into a cathartic jazz performance.

Opening proceedings in this tremendous double bill - part of Jazz North East's 'Women Make Music' series - is Norwegian cellist Maja Bugge, only the second solo performer ever to be chosen for Jazz North’s prestigious ‘Northern Line’ roster of outstanding Northern artists (she is currently based in Lancaster). Responding spontaneously to the acoustics of her performance spaces, she creates beautiful, meditative soundscapes blending ambient sounds, melody and improvisation in performances which are unique and gripping.
